Are you looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity that will also grow your leadership and management skills? Do you enjoy working with young people? Are you a natural teacher and mentor? Do you have some management experience? We are looking for someone to take ownership of our established and successful Youth Programs. We go into schools to help educate students, teachers, faculty and parents on the signs, symptoms, and available treatments of mental illness. We tell personal stories of how help and treatment improve our lives. With suicide being the second leading cause of death among young people age 15-24, our Ending the Silence presentation also seeks to help students talk about suicide, self-harm and other tough topics. We seek to eliminate the myths, fear and stigma of mental illness and change the conversation to getting help and living mentally healthy lives. Our Parents & Teachers as Allies program seeks to help educators identify the signs of a young person in trouble and how to get them the help they need. NAMI on Campus brings a NAMI chapter to a high school or college campus under student leadership.

As the Youth Programs Chair,

You will...

  • Manage our Ending the Silence, Parents & Teachers as Allies and NAMI on Campus programs
  • Coordinate and schedule presentations and presenters
  • Support and guide presenters on their speaking skills and determine what, if any, interventions are needed
  • Keep track of presentation data and disseminate to our NAMI LA County representative
  • Become trained in the Ending the Silence and Parents & Teachers as Allies presentations
  • Use our NationBuilder database system to help you keep track of your presenters, community partners and work-related data
  • You get...

  • Role-specific training and tools to help you succeed in your role, along with guidance from the current successful and experienced Youth Programs Chair
  • Paired up with a Relationship Manager whose sole responsibility is to be sure your volunteer experience is enjoyable
  • Support and recognition for your achievements and contributions
  • To volunteer alongside awesome people, make new connections, and add your rewarding volunteer experience to your resume/portfolio for career advancement
  • To work remotely, with a flexible schedule
  • You have...

  • A personal connection with mental health either through family, friends or personal ties
  • Enthusiasm for helping young people, their families, teachers and faculty around mental health related issues
  • Strong communication, public speaking, and organizational skills
  • Polished professionalism
  • Reliable transportation
  • A goals-oriented, leadership mindset, you enjoy sharing knowledge with others and advocating for important causes
  • The ability to think critically about how to solve self-identified problems and execute solutions with approval
  • The ability to perform and take initiative with minimal direction; you're a self-starter
  • Basic Microsoft Office and Google Suite skills
  • The ability to learn our simple database, NationBuilder
  • Around 7+ hrs/week during the school year to dedicate and 1+/week during the summer
  • A career interest in program management or public health, a plus
  • Some management/leadership experience
  • A reliable commitment to the organization and its work
