Project Details

The Care for Friends Healthcare clinic is a service offered on the 2nd Saturday of every month. Health issues and lack of healthcare cover are a huge issue for Homeless people; this service provides them with a primary healthcare service.

The volunteer clinic is coordinated by a qualified Medical Doctor, assisted by volunteer healthcare workers and coordinators. Guests are encouraged to discuss any ongoing healthcare issues that they have. The clinic is set up to check blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and to provide educational instruction in common healthcare issues. Guests are assisted as the need arises or problems are identified.

Volunteers are involved in greeting guests, by understanding the issues that they have, and (if qualified) by providing the healthcare checks to the guests.

This is a great opportunity to work with people in Chicago, that really need your support and time. Whether you have experience working in the healthcare industry, or are just keen to volunteer, we are keen to hear from you. Currently, we are particularly looking for people who have Healthcare qualifications, and who have the skills to check blood pressure, check blood sugar levels etc.

On the second Saturday of the month from 10:30 am to noon, the clinic screens guests for hypertension, diabetes, and other high risk conditions for the homeless and refers guests to appropriate primary care/medical home partners that have agreed to accept them.

Particularly, there is a need for 1 or 2 non-clinical volunteers to have regular attendance at the clinic in order to assist with scheduling, inventory control, medical records and maintenance of key printed materials. We need more handout materials in both English and Spanish regarding nutrition, diabetic counseling and other subjects. Maintaining these materials for easy use by the clinicians will increase our impact.
