Want to get out of the house and meet new people? Would you like to help those who are sick and homebound? You could play Yathzee with someone who has been stuck in bed for weeks and bored with only family for company. You could read favorite books to someone with poor vision. You could laugh at daytime television or watch old movies with someone who wants company but doesn't want to talk very much. If you are a veteran, you could talk with an older veteran about their own war time experiences.
Come join us at Berkley Palliative Care and Hospice LLC where we provide quality end of life care to our patients in their homes, assisted livings, and nursing homes. Hospice home visitor volunteers go to patients homes and provide companionship to patients and families who are often isolated and unable to easily get out of the home due to debilitating medical conditions. Hospice home visitor volunteers and read, scrapbook, and write letters and emails with patients as well as enjoy reminiscing with fascinating people about their lives. Volunteers are encouraged to share any artistic or musical talents with patients and families if that would be enjoyable for them.
By staying with patients for a couple of hours or an afternoon volunteers also provide caregivers with the opportunity to run to the store, to get a hair cut, to see their own doctor, or just have some quiet time. Volunteers need not be medical professionals as volunteers are not expected to be care provider. Volunteers are not to administer medications, provide medical care, or drive patients and families. Volunteers may call the hospice office with any questions or concerns about a patient and hospice medical staff will be alerted if there is a need for medical care.
