Project Details

Use your creativity to contribute to self-determination and economic development by and for the African community! We're a perfect fit for sewing fans, fashion design students, and anyone skilled in furniture upholstery and re-upholstery who is looking to build their portfolio while supporting a great cause.

Volunteers will re-cover dining chairs, ottomans, stools, lamp shades, pillows, cushions, and more to be a part of our new furniture and accessories line: NZO - African Styles at Home and Abroad! The fabrics will all be African or African-inspired.

We will provide the fabric, buttons, furniture, accessories, and all other materials you need to reupholster! Workshops will be available to train volunteers on the skills required, but previous experience and skill is preferred.

Fresh inventory arrives every few hours, so new pieces are always available! We are open to any new ideas volunteers may have that will enhance the projects. This is a great way to get community service hours while having some creative, artistic fun!

We prefer working with volunteers local to the greater Philadelphia area.

Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles - Philadelphia is located at 832 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19130. We hold volunteer orientations every Thursday night from 5-6pm on the second floor of our store.
