Are you interested in making a difference in your community while learning more about the legal process here in Maine? Consider a volunteer position with the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project!
Family legal matters can be overwhelming for many, particularly those experiencing poverty. A committed Community Volunteers is needed to assist attorneys and the court by being the point of contact for walk-in clients at the Courthouse Assistance Project (CHAP), which is a Volunteer Lawyers Project family law clinic. CHAP volunteers interview clients to determine initial eligibility, establish the primary questions to be addressed with the attorneys, and assist with the completion of certain court forms.
The CHAP clinic runs at the Wiscasset District Court and will be held once a month, on the first Tuesday from 12:30-4pm. Volunteers are the direct link between the client and the attorney and learn valuable information on topics such as legal processes, family law, as well as issues related to poverty and domestic violence in Maine.
