Join staff in weeding and maintaining the flower beds and bio-retention area at Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve.

Impact: Weeds and invasive species out-compete the native plants that were planted in our flower beds and retention areas. This destroys the aesthetic and wildlife value of our planted beds and they reduce the efficiency of our bio-retention areas. By removing these problem plants we are giving our native species a chance to grow and we are keeping the Preserve beautiful.

Volunteer Duties: We will be using our hands, shovels, and loppers to pull and cut weeds.

Special Information: Please bring a water bottle, wear sturdy close-toed shoes and clothing you can get dirty. We will supply the tools and work-gloves.

Work Environment: We will be working outside on uneven ground as we pull and remove weeds from the planted beds and the bio-retention area. There is a restroom on site. As it will still be the summer time, be prepared to work in the heat.

Volunteer Requirements: Pre-registration is required. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old to volunteer. Volunteers under 16 years old will be required to have an adult on site during the entire event. Everyone who volunteers must sign a release form. If anyone is under the age of 18, then a parent or guardian must sign their form as well.

Group Registration Information: Registration as a volunteer is first come, first served. A group leader must email mary.owens@raleighnc.gov to register. All groups will be required to provide a list of names and emails for their volunteers.

Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
