Northstar is a one-on-one tutoring and mentoring program for low-income kids in D.C. and Maryland. Throughout the academic year, we hold our Hyattsville tutoring sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 - 8:00 pm at the Teen Center in Magruder Park (3911 Hamilton St., Hyattsville, MD) Most volunteers sign up for one of the two nights per week, but of course you are welcome to join us for both in your schedule permits!
We match tutors with their own student for the full year (and subsequent years if both return). During the 90 minute tutoring sessions, student-volunteer pairs work together to complete the student’s homework and/or study for upcoming tests. Individualized academic materials are also provided to each student as well in case they do not have enough homework for the full 90 minutes.
Mentoring activities is also an optional part of the program. Outings are at the discretion of the volunteer and student/student’s parent and typically range from trips to a museum or sports game to visiting local parks or going to the movies. Please note that many of our volunteers prefer to keep the student/volunteer relationship to our tutoring sessions and mentoring activities are not a mandatory part of the program.
Finally, we take in new students throughout the year and are therefore always looking for new tutors to sign up! We are also always looking for volunteers who are interested in substituting on a part time basis for tutors who are absent. Substitutes do not have to commit to any particular number of weeks per year and can attend as regularly as their schedule allows.
Please consider helping Northstar make a difference in the lives of Hyattsville students!
