Position Title: Adult Literacy Tutor
Purpose: Help adult, native-English speakers improve their language skills.
General Description: Did you know that over 70,000 adults in Guilford County struggle with basic literacy skills? Reading Connections exists to support these individuals in reaching their literacy goals. We can’t do it without dedicated volunteers who work with students one-on-one and in small groups to improve their reading, writing, speaking, listening, math, technology, and employability skills.
Tutors are matched with students based on their area of interest and availability. All new tutors must complete an 8-hour training before being matched with a student. We offer free monthly training sessions. Tutoring takes place at our offices in Greensboro or High Point or in other public places throughout Guilford County. Tutor Training qualifies volunteers to tutor one-on-one and/or small groups.
Training: Prospective tutors are required to complete all training sessions before being matched with an individual student or a small group of students. The training is designed to address the specific strategies and issues relevant to adult learning and the intake process.
Time Commitment: Tutors are asked to meet with their student(s) for 2-4 hours each week for one year.
Scheduling and Tutoring Sites: The meeting day(s), time(s) and site will be selected at the mutual convenience of both the tutor and student as indicated on applications.
