**Please note: we are accepting applications and completing interviews, but volunteers will not be trained on positions until after the COVID-19 disruption is over. Due to the fluidity of the situation, it is difficult to know when that will be. Thank you for understanding.**
Simpson Literacy Mentoring Program
We still need a mentor for one female kindergarten student! This student is from a family in which all of their siblings have been matched and it would be great if we could get her paired with someone!
Mentors are matched one-to-one with a Kindergarten - 5th grade student and commit to meeting weekly for a literacy tutoring sesson (3 visits/month minimum) and a monthly field trip outing for the school year. Mentors are given prepared lessons based on the students' reading level, interests, and the monthly outing destination. Lessons take place at a library near the student's home. Mentors provide transportation for the student to and from the library and schedule their sessions directly with the parent.
The mentoring program builds on the inherent potential of our youth through three key areas; literacy, exploration, and relationship-building.Mentors and mentees are supported by SHS for 1 year with regular monitoring and supervision, group and individual offerings, and trainings. Alumni mentoring may occur beyond the year if all parties (parent/guardian, mentor, and mentee) wish to continue the relationship.
Currently we need literacy mentors for students in Bloomington, Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Minneapolis, Robbinsdale, and St. Louis Park.
