Location: New Trier Township, Winnetka, IL, 60093
Project Details
Volunteers help remove invasive plants and replace them with native plant plugs. The forests of Skokie Lagoons are a unique place to discover on your own or with a group.

BackYard Nature Center connects children and adults with the wonders of nature in New Trier Township. We do this by developing events and activities in the areas of education/outdoor learning, unstructured play, and habitat restoration.

These programs take place at local parks, schools, and the Skokie Lagoons. Skokie Lagoons is a network of forest, artificial lagoons, channels, and islands that winds along the Edens Expressway between Winnetka, Northfield, and Glencoe.

Volunteers are needed in the following areas:
  • Leading educational nature hikes and bird walks
  • Assisting teachers in creating learning opportunities in nature for their classes
  • Facilitating nature-based play programs
  • Participating in habitat restoration activities at the Lagoons involving the removal of invasive species
  • Supporting marketing and administrative initiatives
  • Participating in strategic planning as a member of our board
