Mission Statement

We strive to improve low income youth's computer and learning skills through caring mentorship, structured training, a vibrant learning environment, and access to a computer at home. The program uses computers as a catalyst for youth to challenge themselves, become engaged in their own learning, and realize greater possibilities academically, professionally, and for their community.

Computers4Kids (C4K) is about computers and so much more. C4K’s strives to empower low income youth by bringing together technology and imagination through supportive mentoring, youth-driven programming, and skill building for life success. We provide a creative and safe out-of-school learning environment where local low-income middle and high school youth work with volunteer mentors and staff to build college and work readiness skills. At C4K young people explore their own ideas, build skills, and gain confidence in themselves through positive relationships, the mastery of technology, and the opportunity to get a free laptop with lifetime support. Membership is free to Charlottesville and Albemarle youth who are eligible for free or reduced price school lunch. In 16 years of serving over 1,400 youth, 97% have graduated from high school on time.

Benefits to youth include:

  • Daily opportunities for hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) activities.
  • Regular one-on-one and group mentoring to build skills and spark new interests for college and career success.
  • Access to resources through The Clubhouse Network, a program of the Museum of Science, Boston in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab.
