The mission of the Afya Foundation is to recover targeted surplus medical supplies, hospital equipment and humanitarian provisions from the New York healthcare, corporate and private communities in order to establish categorized inventory to support ongoing health initiatives in Africa and the Caribbean.
The Afya Foundation serves as a donation-based clearinghouse, with the primary intent of partnering and supporting established organizations in the international health community
The Afya Foundation has set up a network of donor hospitals, health organizations and corporations. We have successfully gathered and sorted supplies and repaired equipment, resulting in the shipment of more than eighty shipping containers (each weighing approximatley 35,000 pounds), each filled with recovered supplies that would otherwise be destined for local landfills or incineration. Our reliability and proficiency have fostered strong and binding relationships with organizations that represent program excellence in the international public health sector, including Partners in Health. We are a highly efficient and effective source for medical supplies, while simultaneously forging systematic change in health care delivery abroad. The Afya Foundation also contributes to positive health and environmental outcomes by reducing waste and incineration. We target and collect durables and unopened unexpired consumable medical supplies from New York-area hospitals, rehab centers, nursing homes, private practices and residences, and ensure that these donated supplies are put into the hands of health care providers abroad -- physicians, nurses, midwives, community health workers, physical and occupational therapists -- all who need medical supplies and equipment in order to deliver aid and make health care improvements.
